What are the most important factors to consider?<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Goals<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s important to realize that you can&#8217;t control what you can&#8217;t measure, and without clearly defined business objectives, there is no reference point for success. A critical role of a data warehouse is to make information easily accessible and present relevant data consistently. This in turn enables quantitatively informed decision making and allows organizations to measure their progress and make informed decisions that align with their strategic goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sources<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This point may seem simple but can quickly become critical to success. From a technical perspective, ETL must function reliably and be scalable in the long term. Anticipate changes on the source side that could impact reliability, and implement functionalities like testing and error handling, in an early stage, to react promptly to possible quality losses or system impairments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other side, there are external factors beyond the responsibility of the technical side. Management must be aware that changes on the source side will inevitably have repercussions on the Data Warehouse environment. What I want to emphasize is the inseparable connection between the source systems and the Data Warehouse &#8211; they must function as a cohesive team. Recognizing this mutual dependence is crucial for smooth operations and effective decision-making throughout the data ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Model<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Building on the technical considerations, it is imperative to emphasize that the data model is not solely a technical blueprint; it evolves into a strategic asset when seamlessly integrated with business processes and stakeholder needs. While technical optimization for performance remains paramount from a developer&#8217;s perspective, the ultimate success of the model lies in its adaptability to the dynamic nature of business requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The model must exhibit flexibility, enabling it to gracefully adapt to changes in data sources, business rules, and analytical needs. It demands more than being a stellar architecture, model, or database; it must also embody a business perspective. This means that as technology evolves and organizational strategies shift, the data model should be agile enough to accommodate these changes without sacrificing performance or integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In essence, the technical prowess of the data model is not an end in itself; rather, it serves as a means to ensure that the model aligns seamlessly with the evolving landscape of both technology and business. This duality, where technical excellence meets a nuanced understanding of stakeholder needs and business dynamics, ensures the data model remains a robust and adaptive cornerstone of the organization&#8217;s data infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Platform<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being rooted in the Microsoft ecosystem, my preference is influenced by the numerous features and capabilities from the Microsoft tech stack. The emphasis on developing speed and the flexibility to respond to stakeholder needs is particularly important to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my view, the ideal platform is one that embodies the principles of developing speed, flexibility, and performance. This ensures the ability for strategic alignment with business goals, adaptability to change, and seamless integration with stakeholder needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my experience, a system should be designed to be open to collaborations with systems from other providers, which is crucial in today&#8217;s diverse technological landscape. However, I acknowledge that achieving seamless cloud-to-cloud connectivity can be an engineering challenge. The ability of a system to collaborate effectively with solutions from different manufacturers ensures a more versatile and interoperable data management environment. This consideration should also be kept in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"datagovernance001\">Data Governance<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the complex definitions and facets of Data Governance, it should be portrayed as a company-wide commitment guiding the integration, utilization, and interpretation of data. The objective is to foster a shared understanding of data, develop a data-driven culture, and instill trust in data, aiming to minimize the time spent on data validation and plausibility checks. While the details of Data Governance require careful definition, the concept should be articulated in a concise and accessible manner to promote a lived and understandable understanding within the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data Governance is not an end in itself; rather, it should serve as a tool for business users to implement the business logic they define sustainably in the data warehouse. The best technical solution is rendered useless without a common understanding and commitment regarding how the data should be utilized. Business users must communicate their needs to developers, who then translate these requirements into logic. The exchange of insights between developers and business users is crucial. This iterative process should be steered, documented, and sustainably embedded within the organization by Data Governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Analytics<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, our focus centered on developing the infrastructure and architecture of the Data Warehouse (DWH). Stakeholders articulated their needs, and developers and engineers translated those into the DWH structure. Now, we recognize the critical importance of a two-way communication flow. It&#8217;s incumbent upon developers and data scientists to present their insights and concepts to stakeholders, illustrating how the DWH can effectively fulfill their requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This reciprocal process, particularly crucial when building a DWH from scratch, encompasses two primary perspectives. First, there&#8217;s an emphasis on standard reporting and the definition of corporate-wide performance metrics. This entails highly streamlined processes, managed meticulously by data governance principles. Stakeholders receive standardized, consistent reports and metrics, ensuring uniformity across the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second perspective focuses on project-specific, departmental, or exploratory data analysis. Here, flexibility and adaptability become paramount to cater to the diverse and evolving needs within different organizational segments. Developers and data scientists collaborate closely with stakeholders, tailoring insights and analyses to meet unique requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This dual approach ensures that the Data Warehouse not only efficiently meets standardized reporting demands but also remains agile and responsive to the specific, evolving needs of various projects, departments, or exploratory analyses. It reflects a holistic strategy that harmonizes organizational standards with the dynamic nature of data-driven exploration within specific domains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What else to consider<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In essence, achieving success in a Data Warehouse project hinges on cultivating a shared understanding within an interdisciplinary team, recognizing that perfection lies not only in the software solution but, more crucially, in crafting a business solution that strategically navigates trade-offs and optimally balances various factors such as features, costs, developing speed, and performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DWH in a nutshell, thx to all, lot&#8217;s of great comments, looking forward to hearing more from you.
